Whiplash is a common injury resulting from motor vehicle accidents, especially in rear-end collisions. Whiplash injury occurs when the head is suddenly and forcefully thrown forward and then backward, causing soft tissue damage to the neck. Symptoms of whiplash may not always appear immediately after the accident; sometimes, they can take hours or even days to manifest.
Here are some common symptoms of whiplash:
Neck pain and stiffness
This is the most common symptom. The pain might increase with neck movement.
Loss of range of motion in the neck
You might find it difficult to turn your head side to side or nod up and down.
Headaches
These often start at the base of the skull and can radiate forward.
Tenderness or pain in the shoulder, upper back, or arms
This can result from the force of the impact being transmitted along the spine and to adjacent structures.
Tingling or numbness in the arms
Nerve irritation or damage can lead to these symptoms.
Fatigue
Some people with whiplash report feeling unusually tired.
Dizziness
Some people might feel dizzy or as if the room is spinning.
Blurred Vision
While less common, this symptom can be concerning.
Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
Again, this is less common but can occur.
Difficulty concentrating and memory problems
Some individuals might find it hard to focus or remember things.
Irritability
Mood changes, including irritability, can sometimes occur.
Sleep disturbances
Difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or experiencing restful sleep can be a symptom.
