Sciatic nerve pain

Sciatic Nerve Pain

Sciatic nerve pain, also known as sciatica, is pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, which branches from your lower back through your hips and buttocks and down each leg. Typically, sciatica affects only one side of your body.

Sciatica is commonly caused by:

Herniated disk

This is the most common cause. The gel-like center (nucleus) of a disk may protrude into or through the disk’s outer lining, irritating the nearby sciatic nerve.

Bone spurs

These are growths that develop on the vertebrae and can press against the sciatic nerve.

Spinal stenosis

Narrowing of the spinal canal in the lower back.

Piriformis syndrome

The piriformis muscle, located deep in the buttock, can spasm and irritate the sciatic nerve.

  • Pain that radiates from your lower (lumbar) spine to your buttock and down the back of your leg.
  • Numbness, tingling, or muscle weakness in the affected leg or foot.
  • The pain can vary widely, from a mild ache to a sharp, burning sensation or excruciating discomfort.
  • Sometimes it can feel like a jolt or electric shock.
