Neuropathy, especially peripheral neuropathy, refers to a range of conditions that involve damage to the peripheral nervous system, which sends signals between the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord) and the rest of the body.

Symptoms

The symptoms of peripheral neuropathy can vary depending on which nerves are affected. Common symptoms include:

  • Numbness, tingling, or prickling sensations, often in the feet or hands.
  • Sharp, burning, or throbbing pain.
  • Extreme sensitivity to touch.
  • Lack of coordination and falling.
  • Muscle weakness or paralysis.

Causes

There are many causes of neuropathy. The most common ones are:

Diabetes

Prolonged exposure to high blood sugar can damage peripheral nerves, leading to diabetic neuropathy.

Injury

Trauma or pressure on nerves, as in carpal tunnel syndrome, can lead to neuropathy. Herniated discs in the neck and or back can press onto nerve roots leading to numbness and tingling into the extremities.

B vitamins, especially B-1, B-6, and B-12, as well as vitamin E and niacin are
